Maroubra Locksmith Guide: Postwar Homes, Units and the Junction

Locks in Maroubra explained: postwar brick homes, walk-up units, new apartments near the Junction, beachfront salt exposure and family security upgrades.

By Local Coogee Locksmith Service, 186 Arden St, Coogee NSW 2034

Maroubra is the next big beach suburb south of Coogee. It stretches from one of Sydney's longest surf beaches inland to Maroubra Junction on Anzac Parade, where Pacific Square and the main shopping strip sit. Much of the suburb was built in the years after the Second World War, so its housing has a character of its own: solid brick homes, rows of walk-up units, and newer apartment buildings growing up around the Junction. It is a family suburb, and most of the lock work we do here is on homes. This guide explains what we see most often and how to keep Maroubra properties secure.

The postwar brick home

A large share of Maroubra's houses are brick homes from the late 1940s to the 1960s. They are generally well built, with solid walls and solid doors. Their weak points are usually not the doors themselves but what the doors lock into, and the age of the hardware.

What we see most often

  • Original locks at the end of their life. Many homes still have locks fitted decades ago. Cylinders wear, springs weaken and keys grow loose.
  • A single latch with no deadlock. Common on older front and back doors.
  • Thin strike plates. Fixed with short screws into thin door frames, they can give way under force even when the door is strong.
  • Back and laundry doors that are weaker than the front door.

What helps

  • Replace worn locks. When a lock has reached the end of its life, replacing it with quality hardware is the right investment. Our lock replacement page explains how we choose hardware to suit the door.
  • Add a deadlock to doors that only have a latch.
  • Reinforce the strike with a heavier plate and long screws into the frame.
  • Treat every external door equally. The back door, laundry door and any door from the garage into the house all deserve the same quality as the front.

Walk-up units

Maroubra has many walk-up blocks, often three or four storeys with a shared front door and stairwell. Unit entry doors in these buildings are frequently original, and their locks may be too.

Common problems

  • unit doors with a single latch;
  • worn cylinders that are stiff to turn;
  • doors that do not latch unless pulled hard;
  • shared front doors that stay open because the closer needs adjusting.

What helps

  • a deadlock or deadlatch you can deadlock from inside;
  • door alignment so the latch catches every time;
  • rekeying if you do not know who holds keys;
  • reporting faulty shared doors to the strata manager.

Always check with the strata manager before changing a unit entry door, as it may be common property or fire-rated. Our apartment security guide explains the strata side in detail.

New apartments around the Junction

The area around Maroubra Junction has seen a lot of new apartment building. These buildings usually have fire-rated unit doors, intercoms, fobs and restricted key systems.

Things to know:

  • Fire-rated doors limit what hardware can be added. Check with the building first.
  • Restricted keys can only be cut on the authority of the registered holder, usually the owners corporation.
  • Fobs are managed by the building, not by a locksmith.
  • Unit locks can often be rekeyed when you move in, with the right approvals.

Units near the Junction change tenants often. Rekeying at each change is good practice for owners. See our lock rekeying page.

Beachfront homes and salt exposure

Homes on and near Marine Parade face the full force of onshore winds straight off the beach. Salt settles on every exposed surface, and metal hardware takes the brunt of it.

Typical salt damage

  • cylinders that gradually stiffen;
  • sliding door locks that seize;
  • window catches that stop closing;
  • rusted screws in strike plates and hinges;
  • keys that eventually snap in corroded locks.

Prevention

  • lubricate locks with a dry lock lubricant once or twice a year;
  • rinse sliding door tracks occasionally;
  • service stiff locks as soon as you notice them;
  • choose hardware with coastal-grade finishes when replacing.

Our lock repair page explains servicing. Our guide on what to do when a key breaks in a lock explains why a stiff lock should never be ignored.

Family homes and child safety

Maroubra has many families with young children. Two areas deserve particular attention.

Window restrictors

Window restrictors stop windows opening wide enough for a child to fall, while still allowing airflow. In NSW strata buildings, certain windows are required to have them. In houses, they are a sensible addition wherever young children sleep or play upstairs. Our window locks page explains the options.

Keyless exit

Any lock on an exit door should allow quick escape in a fire without a key. Deadlocks that need a key on the inside can be dangerous if the key is not to hand. For family homes, we recommend locks with a thumb turn or handle inside. Our article on deadlocks versus deadlatches explains the choices.

Garages, side gates and back yards

Many Maroubra homes have garages, carports and side gates. These are often overlooked:

  • Garages with an internal door into the house should have a lock on that door as good as the front door's.
  • Side gates with a simple latch are an easy way into the back yard. A lockable latch or padbolt helps.
  • Sheds and storage often hold expensive tools and bikes behind a basic padlock.

Our security locksmith page explains how we assess every entry point together.

Shops along Anzac Parade

Maroubra Junction has a busy strip of shops, cafés and businesses along Anzac Parade. Commercial doors take heavy use, and common problems include worn latches, door closers out of adjustment, rear doors that need to be secure after close and keys held by former staff.

Regular adjustment and rekeying after staff changes prevent most failures. See our commercial locksmith page. We arrange planned commercial work early or late within our hours of 7:00 AM to 12:00 AM.

Moving into a Maroubra home

When you buy or rent a home here, you rarely know how many keys exist. Previous owners, tenants, family, cleaners and tradespeople may all have held copies.

A sensible first step:

  1. Check the condition of every external lock.
  2. Replace any that are worn, damaged or too weak.
  3. Rekey the ones in good condition.
  4. Key them alike so one key opens every door.
  5. Count the keys and know who holds them.

Our guide rekey or replace locks? helps you decide between the two. If you rent, check the NSW landlord and tenant lock rules before changing anything.

Lockouts in Maroubra

Lockouts here follow familiar patterns: keys left at the beach, self-latching unit doors, and keys lost on nights out. If it happens:

  • check for any legitimate way in first;
  • find any proof of address you can;
  • call a locksmith and describe the door clearly.

Because Maroubra is a little further from our Coogee base than South Coogee or Clovelly, we confirm timing on every call. We never promise an arrival time we have not confirmed with you, and we work 7:00 AM to 12:00 AM, seven days. Our lockout service page explains what happens when we arrive.

A Maroubra checklist

Houses

  • Are the original locks still working smoothly, or are they worn?
  • Does every external door have a deadlock?
  • Are strike plates fixed with long screws?
  • Is the door from the garage into the house secure?
  • Are side gates lockable?

Units

  • Does your unit door latch every time?
  • Is there a deadlock, or a deadlatch you can deadlock?
  • Have locks been rekeyed since you moved in?

Near the beach

  • Have stiff locks been serviced?
  • Are sliding door locks and window catches moving freely?

Families

  • Are window restrictors fitted upstairs?
  • Can everyone get out without a key?

Questions Maroubra residents often ask

My house still has the locks it was built with. Should I replace them all? Not necessarily. Have them checked. Replace any that are worn, damaged or too weak, rekey the rest and key them alike.

Can you secure the door from my garage into the house? Yes. It should have a lock as good as your front door, ideally a deadlock with keyless exit from inside.

Our unit door only latches if we slam it. Is the lock broken? Usually the door or strike is out of line. Adjustment normally fixes it.

The honest summary

Maroubra's postwar homes are solid, but their original locks and thin strike plates are often past their best. Units need attention to latching and key control, beachfront homes need regular servicing for salt, and family homes benefit from window restrictors and keyless exit. Replacing worn locks, rekeying the rest and reinforcing frames covers most needs.
